How to Add a New Wage

Wages define how much an employee is paid, when their pay begins, and their standard schedule. Adding a wage is required before an employee can be paid.

📝 Fields on the Wage Form

When adding a new wage, you’ll be asked to complete the following fields:

  • Compensation Type – Choose whether the employee is paid hourly or salary (annually).

  • Wage – Enter the hourly or salary wage amount, depending on the compensation type.

  • Vacation Rate (%) – Enter the vacation pay rate (e.g., 4% is typical in many provinces).

  • Start Date – The date this wage takes effect.

  • End Date (optional) – Use this if the employee is only being paid for a set period (e.g., a temporary role or end of contract). Otherwise, leave it blank. Province will automatically populate the end date if the employee is later terminated or given a new wage.

📅 Work Schedule

Below the wage fields, you'll enter the employee's regular work schedule—how many hours they typically work per day.

  • This schedule is used when you click "Generate Earnings" during payroll. Province will automatically create shifts based on this schedule.

  • For salaried employees, if no schedule is provided, the system assumes 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday.

  • For hourly employees, the schedule is optional—but helpful. If you don’t enter a schedule, you’ll need to manually enter earnings during each pay run.

This schedule enables more accurate payroll, wage proration, and future features coming to Province, like statutory holiday calculations and Records of Employment. It also reduces the manual work needed during each pay run.

Once you’ve filled out the form, click Save. You can create a new wage later if the employee’s pay changes.
